Death with Dignity

Dr. Roger Kligler will be speaking at the Jonathan Bourne Public Library located at 19 Sandwich Road, Buzzards Bay on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 6 PM about medical aid in dying, an option for terminally ill adults at the end of life to receive a prescription that they could ingest to alleviate unbearable suffering and die peacefully in their sleep. There is a bill (H2246/S1331 “An Act Relative to End of Life Options”) before the legislature in Massachusetts. This option is available in 10 states and the District of Columbia, but not yet in Massachusetts.

Dr. Kligler is uniquely qualified to talk about this topic. He is a retired Internist, who took care of patients in the office and hospital and cared for them in hospice. He has incurable Stage IV metastatic prostate cancer and has been under treatment for 22 years. As a family member, he witnessed a loved one die a painful death.  An established subject matter expert on medical aid in dying, Dr. Kligler has been working to advance this option in the Commonwealth for 9 years. These efforts include speaking about need for this compassionate legislation at community events across the state, working to move the Massachusetts Medical Society from opposition to engaged neutrality, participating in media interviews, meeting with members of the Massachusetts Legislature, about the need to enable terminally ill, mentally capable adults to be able to have this choice here. All are welcome to this in person event. The location is accessible to the disability community.
